Prepping for Ritual

Elizabeth Chapman

You are going to perform ritual tonight and of course there is excitement and anticipation. However, in order to really be ready when you stand in your ritual place, create sacred space, and perform your working, there are some things you can do in advance to enhance this experience. Create a supplies list and make sure you have everything you need; take the time now to gather everything together so that you are not running around at the last minute trying to either locate an item you know you have somewhere in your home or having to run out to a store to buy something you couldn’t find or ran out of before. Make sure your ritual space is tidied up and organized; this way you won’t get distracted by the dust bunnies under the couch or by seeing some mundane items that are so out of place that that’s all you can focus on when you are supposed to raising energy or casting sacred space. Take a relaxing bath or shower; use essential oils, herbs, light candles in the bathroom, anything that reminds you in advance that ritual is going to happen not to mention washing away any negative bits of energy you may have picked up recently before you begin. If you are going somewhere else for ritual, plan to leave a few minutes early so that you don’t get upset while driving because you are running late or fume because you are stuck in rush hour traffic somewhere. Take the time before you enter into ritual space, either at home or away, to just close your eyes and take a few deep breaths; deep breathing not only gives your brain more oxygen so you feel more alert but calms your spirit. Take a moment to think about the why of your ritual as well. Why are you doing ritual tonight in the first place? Why do you choose the path you are walking on? Finally, relax and enjoy the experience that you have worked to create for yourself. Ritual at its most basic is supposed to bring you joy! Otherwise, why do it in the first place?
