Genus Loci

E Chapman

A Genus Loci was originally associated with the Roman people as a protective “spirit of a place”. This is how Witches and Pagans who choose to work at creating relationships with this type of energy view them.

Every place in nature or in various urban areas can have a Genus Loci that is part of the fabric of its existence. Some are more willing to work with people and some give off a sense that they just wish to be left alone. This may be especially true in areas where mankind’s pollution or development may have irrevocably changed the land itself.

It is always polite to at least attempt to reach out to a “Spirit of Place” if you are planning some type of ritual or magickal working in the area. After all, how would you feel if someone just showed up at your home, came into your living room, and began performing a ritual without even asking your permission or even acknowledging your presence? If you have a place such as your own backyard where you regularly plan to practice your craft, you could start out by leaving simple offerings to the Genus Loci. Water is always an excellent choice.

Make sure you are maintaining this space; get rid of any garbage or other manmade items you have just hanging around that you don’t need. Spend time just sitting in the area to see if something seems to be trying to reach out to you in some way; you could always perform some type of divination for potential messages. Finally, ask permission and explain what the ritual purpose is going to be and assure the spirit you do not mean to disrupt their space in any permanent way.

We have always believed it is better to learn to work with available energies around us. It is much easier to work magick with allies rather than have to invest all our personal energy into a working because we haven’t been willing to accept help or even ask for it.
