Urban Witchcraft

E Chapman

Many people have the mental image of Witches or Pagans as people who live in cute little cottages or on farms in the country or in the wilds out in the middle of nowhere. This may actually be a smaller percentage of this population than they realize; many of us live, work, and practice in cities around the world. While we all value our contact with the natural world around us, the reality is that we may be practicing in various yards or parks within our own environment or even inside within our homes and apartments. It doesn’t matter; what does is to develop respect for the world in which we interact regularly. This may mean taking the time to clean up the park, “reduce, reuse and recycle” as much as we can, and develop an awareness of the different and varied energies of the city itself that can become part of our regular practice. Instead of wishing for something you can’t have or don’t want because many of us are very happily ensconced in our cities, take a walk around and really attempt to feel out the various energies in different locations and different times of day that you can tap into as part of ritual and spellwork. Research the history of your place. What made people decide to live and grow here? Look for landmarks and historical spots and see if others value them as well. Go outside at different times of the day and seasons to connect with the weather you have. Many of us spend too much time indoors or in a car going from place to place to take the time to appreciate the beauty that can be found throughout the city. Check out the local green spaces. The point is to adapt yourself to where you are and develop your own practice that matches.
